The consultative draft of the Scottish National Sexual Health Strategy recommends that SHARE should constitute part of the sex education curriculum throughout Scottish secondary schools.

The role that research evidence has played in formulating sex education policy in Scotland since Devolution has been investigated by Helen Harper for a PhD thesis. Although many politicians and policy makers subscribe to the ideal of 'evidence-based policy', there are many factors which obstruct this. This study, based on in-depth interviews with researchers, health promotion specialists and civil servants, examined the political, organisational and individual factors that facilitate or hinder the use of research evidence in sex education policy. A particular focus was the way in which the interim results of the SHARE trial were used.
